Wow – That was easier than I expected – So, I want to add a WiFi hotspot to my boat, and I wanted it to work anywhere. So I got a Gl.Inet travel router and the ZTE dongle for a data account I set up on T-Mobile. Thus far, this has greatly exceeded my expectations.

Plug and Play, works with Google Fi – Super easy to get working. Order your data only Fi SIM, order this device, insert SIM (micro adapter recommended), plug into computer, activate Fi using secret code, browse internet. I am getting about 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up, which is about right for Fi/T-Mobile where I sit. Ping is also as expected, north of 50ms, so I won’t try to do anything particularly time sensitive.

No longer using my iPhone as a mobile hotspot. – So far it’s been using my mobile hotspot data, I’ll wait on and see if it continues to use and stays connected. Before all this I had to go on Metro PCS website to have the modem connected through it’s IMEI. I’ll have to look at other options as far as I know, might have to look into T-Mobile or elsewhere. As far as all this this modem is my only option as I live in the Midwest and T-mobile has a strong connection out here. Not trying to get a 1 year contract with these ISP out here.

It’s a basic antenna that works. – When it came, I unboxed it and plugged it into my laptop. Immediately it launched an installer for the driver, and after that finished, it was up and running after I popped in the SIM card from Mint Mobile. It’s about on par with my iPhone for signal strength and speed, so no complaints there. Only minor thing I would change is that the USB stick itself is a bit long and bulky, so be prepared for that.
